Went to the Toxic Holocaust show last night. Truly amazing. Although I didn’t figure out why they wanted to Nuke the Cross, I did figure out what makes them a great band, fabulous guitar work and dedication to trash out! It got me in the mood to listen to some good Canadian Sacrifice.

Six Guns Over Tombstone put on a good show as opener, despite being short a guitar player. Apparently they’re taking applications if you’re interested.

But, the surprise highlight of the night is local band Mortillery. They up the chick quotient with three women in their band. We’ll be playing their ep on Friday so be sure to tune in!

Next up on the metal list, Anvil and Slayer in Calgary next weekend!
Remember Bison BC is coming to town with Lazarus AD in July.

Canadian Call Out!

SOCAN, or the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, measures how much Canadian content radio stations are playing and divides up money to give to individual artists based on those numbers. Across Canada it is in fact SOCAN week next week and we at Heavy Metal Lunchbox would like to take it one step further than the usual 30% requirement usually set as a standard for Canadian content. Yes. We would like to put together an entire 2 hours of Canadian metal!

And we would like your suggestions to keep us going. Want to hear your favorite Razor track, or perhaps something new from Divinity. Whatever, give us your suggestions and rock out as only Canadian metal heads can.

Edmonton Metal Lives!

1980s Edmonton oozed metal bands. And quality rockers at that. Today’s show featured two great Edmonton metal bands who came to prominence in the 1980s.
White Wolf made it to such heights as MuchMusic, MTV after they were signed by RCA in 1984. According to the website linked above, White Wolf came back together in 2007 and may possibly still be producing music.

Disciples of Power are often referred to as Canada’s most underrated and under appreciated metal band. Formed in 1986 from Medicine Hat! Their last album was put together in 1996 and they’ve never been heard from since…… No. Side projects included Dead Man’s Train and Section VIII.

Yes. Bison, the most rocking band in Canada and perhaps the world, makes a triumphant return to Edmonton. Get your tickets for July 10th at the Starlite Room. Especially if you have never seen them before. Their ability to rock will far surpass any band you have seen before. Well, with perhaps the exception of Maiden. Their new album Quiet Earth must be experienced live if you are a fan of technically superb heavy, sludgy yet thrashy metal. Yes, Bison accomplishes true metal style!

Begrime Exemious

Local death metal band Begrime Exemious visited the Heavy Metal Lunchbox studio today. A band since 2004, they’ve put out their first EP “Set Ablaze the Kingdom of Abraham”.
Their next upcoming Edmonton show will be on July 18th at the Rendezvous Pub, so keep your metal ears open.

Skepsis at the Mead Hall

Just lettin’ you know local death metal band Skepsis will be playing the Mead Hall this Wednesday with Eldgammel and Mother Died Today. Be sure to check it out, they’ve got their metal together! It should be a great show.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil

Well, with my recent viewing of Flight 666, I was recommended Anvil! The Story of Anvil. I had heard previously that I should watch the film as it is The Wrestler for metalheads and in the words of CJSR’s movie aficianado, Moving Radio’s Christian Zyp, “I saw the documentary and had to go to their show just to give them money.” I read a review in the New Yorker and now I simply must have a copy. Here is a quote from the New Yorker review,
“This film is not about rock music at all, still less about school lunches in Ontario, or unusual uses for vibrators; it is about time, and how it threatens to fade us out like a song on the radio, and why, risking ridicule, and leaning on love, we should crank up the volume and keep going. Whatever Lips maintains, not all has been said and done.”

Sam Dunn Does it Again!

Canadian Metal Kings Sam Dunn and Scott McFadyen have done it again with their newest documentary Iron Maiden: Flight 666!

For a band well known for their privacy, this film is sure to be an intimate and admiring look at the band as it is one of metalhead Dunn’s first and remaining top metal bands. The band let Dunn in to their lair as he travelled with them on their private jet and hung out with them between shows and tour legs.

It opens today at 7pm at South Edmonton Common, be there early to get your tickets because I will take down anyone that gets in my way!

Death Toll Rising On CJSR!

Local death metal band Death Toll Rising stopped by Heavy Metal Lunchbox on Friday. Along with heavy bass lines and rapid drum kicks they brought with them some excellent merchandise and promoted their just passed show. Playing at Brixx downtown, or as I like to call it, the old Velvet Underground, Death Toll Rising was the after party for Sunday’s Cannibal Corpse show.

We will soon post a link to the interview with the band members and their myspace page. If you haven’t heard their recent ep Spontaneous Decapitation, check out the prime metal being made right here in Edmonton.
